Google Chrome Tricks : 5 Useful Tricks You Should Know

Google Chrome is an amazing browser. It is light-weight and faster than the other browsers like Firefox, Safari etc. You can easily compare the performance of Google Chrome with other browsers and I bet, you will vote for this awesome browser from Google. Even, if you are still not satisfied with the performance, you can always speed up the Google chrome browser by following some tricks.

Apart from the performance, there are many reasons for what I prefer the Google Chrome browser. There are too many hidden features in Google Chrome that you might not know. If you are a power user, here are five awesome Google Chrome tricks that will make your day.

1.Using Google Chrome as a Calculator : Yes, from now on, you don’t need to use the mobile calculator or search on Google for basic calculations and conversions. Do it all right from the Google Chrome browser.

In the URL address bar, also known as Omnibox, type any calculation (see image) and hit the Enter key.

On the next page, you will see this:

Amazing, right?

Well, this requires the internet connection. So, what if there is no internet connection with you? You can still use the Google Chrome browser as a calculator. Just press the Ctrl + Shift + J  key-combination from the keyboard. This will open the browser console at the lower part of the browser. Now, type any simple mathematical impression and hit the Enter key. The calculated result will be shown immediately.

2.Select and Drag Content to Search : Usually, when we want to search on Google, we copy-paste the search phrase or select and right-click for “Google search for….”, right? There is an easier alternative. See the screenshot below.

I selected the couple of words and dragged into the search box. The selected words have been appended with the previous search terms. Hitting the Enter key displays the new results. But, if you want to search for only the selected texts, just drag the selection into the address bar. You should see the search results for your selected words or phrase.

If you are using a Mac system, highlight the text, press the Ctrl key and click on the selected area.

3.Reopen the Closed Tabs in Google Chrome : If you closed tabs mistakenly, here is a quick way to recover them. Click on the Settings icon > Recent Tabs and the list shows all the recently closed tabs. Click on any of them and it will open in a new tab.

Or, simply press Ctrl + Shift + T to open any closed tab. Repeating the combination will open the closed tabs one-after-one.

Alternatively, here is a recommended Chrome app called as One Tab which is a really good tool for managing tabs. It helps to save 95% of memory usage by clubbing all opened tabs into a single folder. You can access all the stored tabs at one place and use them as and when necessary.

4.Switch Between Tabs in Google Chrome : Generally people uses the mouse to switch between the tabs but you can do so without it. When multiple tabs are open, you can switch using the Ctrl + Number key combinations. For example:

• Use Ctrl + 1 for the first tab.


• Use Ctrl + 2 for the second tab.


• Use Ctrl + 3 for the third tab.

and so on.

5.Access Google Chrome Browser Data from Anywhere : If you have to use multiple computers regularly and want to make your Chrome bookmarks, themes, settings and extensions available on other systems too, simply click on the Settings > Sign in with Chrome.

Once you activate this feature, make sure that all the data get synched properly. Otherwise you won’t be able to access them from other computers. This feature is very useful if you want to sync bookmarks into multiple computers.

Some Common Combinations

There are a lot of keyboard combinations which make it easier to use Chrome and know its various functionality. Here is a recap of some of them.

• Ctrl + Shift + Del – takes you into the settings page for deleting the browser history.


• Ctrl + 9 – takes you into the last open tab.


• Ctrl + Shift + T – reopen the last closed tab and works up to 10 tabs.


• Ctrl + Shift + B – toggles bookmarks.


• Ctrl + H – takes you to browser history.


• Alt + F – takes you to the Settings menu.


• Shift + Click any URL – opens link in a new window.


• Ctrl + Shift + V – selected content is pasted from the clipboard in sans formatting.
