Create User Account in Windows 7 or Vista
1. Go to Control panel > Add or remove user accounts.
2. Now click on the “Create a new account” option. Give a name of your account, sayDropbox-2. Also set the password for your account. Once you are done, just close the control panel window.
Note: It is not mandatory that the new account must have the administrative privilege. But for the convenient of use, you should make that an administrator as the User Group Policy can block your Dropbox installation files.
Install and configure Dropbox from the new user account
1. Log off from your primary account and log-in by the newly created account (Dropbox-2). Create a new folder in root drive (generally C:).
2. Download and install Dropbox. Choose the recently created folder as your Dropbox folder.
After successful completion of Dropbox installation log-out from your current user account (currently Dropbox-2).
3. Again log-in to your primary user account and navigate to the following path at Windows explorer
[Root Drive Letter]:UsersUSERNAME(2nd)AppDataRoamingDropboxbin
My second user account name is Dropbox-2 and the root drive is C: so the the path for me is
C:UsersDropbox-2AppDataRoamingDropboxbin
4. In this folder you can find the executive file Dropbox.exe. Right-click on it and selectSend to > Desktop (Create shortcut). This will create a shortcut on your desktop.
5. Right-click on the shortcut icon and select “Properties” > go to “Shortcut tab” in the“Properties” dialogue box. Now in the target field append the following command following by a single space before the line:
runas /user:2nd_username
The command for me looks like
runas /user:Dropbox-2 C:UsersDropbox-2AppDataRoamingDropboxbinDropbox.exe
6. Now click on “Apply” to save the changes.
To run the second instance of Dropbox just double click on the recently created shortcut icon. It will ask you to enter the password for the 2nd user.
Put that password and enjoy using of two Dropbox instances.
Dropbox allows registration of any number of accounts with different email ID. But you can use maximum 2 GB space in Dropbox Dropbox account. So you can create multiple numbers of user accounts in your Windows 7 or Vista and run different Dropbox instances in each account to overcome the limitation.
Our intention is not to inspire you for using more space than Dropbox provides. Dropbox is a great service and they provide 2 GB space at free of cost. They also have another scheme for those who want to use more space (50 GB/100GB). But the service is paid. So we recommend to be honest with Dropbox and pay the value for using the great service.
